One of the joys of traveling is the opportunity to meet new people, but in many cases, you won’t get that opportunity if you don’t learn how to interact with locals. Although there are dozens of ways that you can integrate into a society, we have gone through this list and pulled out the top three ways that you can interact with locals, no matter where you decide to go.

1. Stay with them.

It sounds overly simple, but if you really want a chance to fully immerse yourself in a culture, you’ve got to get out of that hotel and into their homes. You’ll instantly be surrounded by the very people you want to get to know, and you’ll have access to their friends, and the ability to join in their daily lives. By far, this is the single best way to interact with locals.

So, how do you find places to stay? Do an online search for people who will rent out rooms in their houses to travelers. This is a growing business and you’ll be able to find people willing to host you even in the smallest and most rural portions of the world. A popular alternative is to work out a share agreement, where your hosts agree to give you free room and board in exchange for having your help with daily chores, farm work or similar types of barter.

2. Visit local hangouts.

If you want to meet locals, you need to avoid the tourist traps and actually visit the local hangouts. Ask your host family where the best places are and then make an effort to go and reach out to people. Local cafes are among the best places to do this, but you can get the same results in a tapas bar, an open air market or anywhere where local people congregate.

It may be difficult at first, but try striking up a conversation with people sitting nearby, or even with the help. Ask direct questions, such as what do they like best about their town. This is a great ice breaker and most locals will be more than willing to share their love of the place where you are visiting.

3. Take part in festivals.

The practice of holding festivals is common throughout most of the world, and this is a great way to meet the locals. There are a few big name festivals that will most likely draw more tourists, such as Carnival in Brazil, but if you go to the smaller, more local festivals, this offers a great way to get right in there with the locals and start celebrating.

We recommend reading up on the festivals and customs before you arrive so that you’ll know exactly what to expect and how you should act. It may be a party, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should go wild. Always respect the local cultures and you’ll find it very easy to get out there and meet some terrific new people.
