Inside a Youth Hostel
When you’re looking for accommodations for a trip, it’s pretty standard to find the best hotels or the ones that are conveniently located and use this as a guide as to where you should stay. While this strategy certainly works well for tourists, or for those that just want to get away from it all, if you’re trying to find ways to immerse yourself in a culture, or you just want to become a smart traveler, you’ll need to dig a little bit further to uncover the best places to stay.
While fancy hotels are nice, you are usually far removed from the local scene and this means that you’re missing out on new opportunities to broaden your horizons. The only exception to this rule would be if you are planning to visit an area that is considered unsafe. In this instance, a well known chain hotel in a safe part of town may be the only option to ensure your personal safety.
However, the vast majority of towns in Europe and throughout the rest of the world are safe and you can find many different places to stay that will have much more to offer than fluffy towels and a turn down service. These are the places where you will get a true glimpse of the local culture and the chance to meet with people you may have never come into contact with otherwise.
Youth hostels are a common stop for travelers, and in addition to being able to meet locals, this is a great way to make friends from all over the world. By far, this is one of the most economical accommodations and for the most part, you should be able to find a clean and safe place to stay when you’re visiting one. However, as these hostels become more popular, it’s getting a little tougher to find the ones that haven’t been taken over by tourists.
The next step is to locate homeowners in the area where you will be staying that offer guest accommodations. These are similar to bed and breakfast inns in the United States and they offer a great way to meet new people and learn more about a culture. These are generally run by families, so you will have access to a large group of people, right off the bat, as well as a wealth of information about the place where you are staying.
You can even take it a step further and stay with farmers or ranchers out in the country, near the town where you will be visiting. This kind of rural experience is unmatched, especially if you are looking for a relaxing retreat in a bucolic environment.
Lastly, you can usually find monasteries that are willing to open their doors to travelers. These retreat houses are serene and generally far off the beaten path, giving you rare access into places where you normally would not be able to go. These are just a few options that will help you find the best places to stay, wherever you may roam.
