Meet Jane

To bring you the best experience when traveling to New York, USA we decided to interview Jane Marx

Tell us about yourself – where are you from and what do you do?

I am a seasoned, sentient, self-employed New York City Tour Guide. I was born in New York. I lived here all my life. The rhythm of the city is in my blood: I am an ‘urban character.’ My personality is reflective of my years surviving in this metropolis.

When do you recommend travelers visit your location?

The ideal time to visit New York is January, February and early March. Yes, it may be cold, damp and there may be a blizzard. Pull your socks up. Come when the streets are empty. See the paintings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art up close; get in and out of the Statue of Liberty with speed; walk in the Times Square on the sidewalk.

How can a traveler avoid tourist traps and instead experience what local people do?

Steer clear of tourist traps. Dine and purchase your pleasures in neighborhoods where we live, the locals. Get a map of the five counties. Explore. Talk to us locals. We’re direct and honest. We’re direct and honest. We mirror growing up in high density–walk fast, talk fast, and blurt. No one thinks before they speak. We have too much to say. Come on my tour. I’ll show you New York.

Walking in neighborhoods opens your eyes up to the many cities within our city. Ethnic diversity abounds. It is present in our clothing, accents, worship services, food, art, theater and even arthitectural styles. Dine and shop in neighborhoods.  Well publicized tourist haunts are worthy of your visit, but not your expenditure.

What’s the best way for a visitor to experience the local culture?

Walk everywhere. Invade the streets. Yet never cross at the corner. That is a sign of moral weakness. Cross where the mood strikes, on a diagnonal. You may save a second or two. These seconds add up. Now you will have more time to have fun here. And fun you shall have when you let me show you around.

What local foods or drinks should travelers be sure to try?

Our foods are tasty and caloric. Just succomb to your desire: cheese cake, black and white cookies, bagels and lox, bialys and cream cheese, really sour pickels, hot dogs with sauerkraut, pastrami, knishes, blintzes, cannolis, dumplings, cream soda, Brooklyn Lager, and even wine grown way out on Long Island.

How does the traveling experience in your area change throughout the year?

When the weather is bright and mild tourists arrive. Be an adventurer. Come in the winter. See the city when they are no leaves on the trees. You can really see the city. Despite the frost in the air, let the city warm your heart: you’ll be a fan for life.
